This November sees the release of Magdalena Abakanowicz – Human Nature, a richly illustrated, bilingual (Dutch/English) publication on the groundbreaking work of Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930–2017). Published by Hatje Cantz.

Abakanowicz gained international acclaim for her monumental textile sculptures – the so-called Abakans – and her haunting human figures. Her oeuvre addresses themes such as collectivity, individuality, trauma, ecology, and the relationship between humans and nature. Human Nature brings her work into dialogue with that of contemporary artists including Marlene Dumas, Diana Thater, Anish Kapoor, Kimsooja, Kader Attia, Nicole Beutler, and Kristina Benjocki & Stijn Verhoeff.

The publication is based on a series of interviews with these artists reflecting on Abakanowicz’s artistic and ideological legacy, and features an extensive image section. It also includes a visual timeline and contextual commentary on the Human Nature exhibition, on view at Het Noordbrabants Museum in the summer of 2025. This volume accompanies the exhibition Magdalena Abakanowicz: Human Nature and the eponymous symposium, jointly organised by Het Noordbrabants Museum the TextielMuseum and Provincie Noord Brabant.
